The idea of ​​establishing a University in Greece, existing since the time of the Struggle for Independence, was realized on April 14, 1837 with the issuance of the decree  “On the Establishment of the University” , which led to the establishment and operation of the University of Athens. It is the first University not only of the Greek state but also of the entire Balkan Peninsula and the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean.
